Assistant Labor Secretary Phyllis C. Borzi, said, “The rise of the gig economy has spotlighted the lack of portable benefits that has long plagued workers in a wide variety of employment settings.” This from a report on Bloomberg Law.

“While some here may think that this challenge of portability is new, and it’s because of the on-demand economy and factors that are coming around now, it’s been baked into the system for decades,” Borzi continued.

Many employers are hesitant to offer benefits to “gig” workers because the move may cause them to be seen as traditional employers and open them up to potential liability.
